Old UGS with new X controller

My older X controller ran the old UGS stable and classic version for years. I now have a new X controller with a newer version of GRBL I guess, and some of the UGS features are not working. I like fewer bells and whistles, as the software works great as is. Is there any way to use the classic, stable version of UGS with the new Grbl boards? Do I need to upgrade a new Java or something on my laptop? I already have a Raspberry Pi running their version of UGS just fine, but want the laptop option too. Thanks in advance.

Is the older X-Controller in operable condition? If you can connect to it and retrieve the GRBL settings, you should be able to install that version of GRBL on the newer X-Controller. That being said, there are typically bug fixes and enhancements that go into newer versions, so it might be better to just take some time and slowly get used to the new bells & whistles.

No The X controller started to smoke. I hit the emergency stop and turned off the power before any damage impacted the motors. Not being an electronics tech, I don’t know whether it was the power supply or one of the boards, so I just decided to buy another one. I have the new one working with a Raspberry PI, but UGS will only move through the screen jog buttons and doesn’t show position. I downloaded the new version, but the win7 computer may not be compatible. I may try to upgrade two win10 on it or just get a newer laptop.

Sounds like a great excuse to get a new laptop!!

Any thoughts of getting rid of the X-Controller that started smoking? I might be interested in trying to fix it.

I’ve been looking on FB marketplace for a cheap “newer” model Laptop. I have about 3 old ones now with win 7. I was thinking I’d ebay the old X controller unit. I figure it’s either the power supply or the main board. I can’t really see any blackened damaged, so it shouldn’t be much of a capital investment. Of course I’m not elec tech.

What are you looking to get for it considering the magic smoke escaped from something?
