So I have a 6 or 7 yr old 1000mm x-carve and using dewalt router. I just recently upgraded the original controller to inventables x-controller. Already a big difference. QUESTION 1) does anybody know what size/power stepper motors likely came with the basic 1000mm kit back then? I can’t find anythng online using the numbers on the motors and they are not labeled specifically. QUESTION 2) What do you recommend as an upgrade to upgrade stepper motors using my x-controller. I don’t need the most powerful on the planet but do want to step up a couple notches without taxing the x-controller. Please note that I am also upgrading rest of machine to ball screw driven style. IN A NUTSHELL: What size motors do I likely have now, what would be the most powerful that you’d recommend for the X-Controller, and what would be a good choice somewhere in the middle? THANKS IN ADVANCE!
The x-controller has a tunable potentiometer for current output up to 4 Amps, so long as your are within the spec for the current available for the stepper driver, then you are fine to decide what torque level you desire. the stock machine steppers are currently these ones: NEMA23 140 oz/in 2.8A Stepper Motor with GT2 Pulley (KL23H251-28-4AP) |
2.8Amp 140oz motors
and the upgrade ones are 2.8A 220oz ones.
Is that correct, 60 percent more torque but still 2.8 amps?
Thanks, this is helpful.
Yes, with a different gear ratio a higher torque output can be achieved with the same power input. However the motors speed would be reduced as a result of the new gear ratio… but the max plunge rate is reduced for safety and to prevent lost steps anyway, so using a slower max speed motor had little to no effect on actual carve times anyway… not unless you’re using like 100IPM plunge
No gears in a stepper motor. Different thing here. Torque is generated by the strength of the magnetic field in the coil windings. Typically, you’ll notice that the higher torque motors are longer. You have to be careful when selecting motors as some won’t get close to their full torque with the 24v power supply because of the higher phase inductance.
That’s true. for some reason i was thinking about the add on torque converters which are a gear pack.
