I recently acquired a X-Carve machine. 750x750 w/ belts.
Most of my projects are fairly small inlays. I did a recent piece using the advanced vcarve for inlays using Carbide create.
It looks like the machine is not really accurate enough for this work. Looking for advice on how to improve this.
Settings:
-
60 degree bit
-
pocket depth 1.5 mm
-
inlay plug depth 1.3mm, top gap 1.0 mm.
-
over-night glue
-
Then a facing pass to remove excess material from the inlay plug.
In the picture there are several gaps circled.
What is a reasonable minimum size of the inlay plug (width) to plan for jobs like this?
I have done similar jobs by doing a straight-sided pocket and inlay plug with similar results. The machine does not seem to be as accurate as a lead-screw machine, which is probably expected.
Any advice on improving the fit to get no gaps appreciated.
