I am new to the machine. I have been wanting to do a cutout of a cow/bull face. There is detail on the face that I know how to carve. How do I set this up to cut through only on the outside shape of the cows face? Every time I was trying to set up for a cut through it showed that it would be doing a full cut through on all the detail work too, meaning that I would end up with several individual pieces. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
Here is a method that might work for you.
- Group all of the objects that you intend to use for creating the outline and then lock them in place.
- Make a new workpiece by duplicating the workpiece.
- In the new workpiece, delete any object that you do not want to be part of the outline.
- Select all objects.
- Combine the objects into a single object.
- Change the cut type to “Cut outside shape path”.
- Set the depth to full depth.
- Add/Remove tabs as desired.
If you want to use the same bit to carve the outline, perform the following:
- Copy the newly created outline and paste it into the first workpiece.
- Ensure they are both aligned as necessary.
- Carve away.
If you want to use a different bit to carve the outline, perform the following:
- Update the bit information on the newly created workpiece.
- Carve the first workpiece, change the bit, and then carve the second workpiece.
One thing to keep in mind is that any inside corners will be limited by the radius of the bit used to carve the outline. There are several methods to resolve this type of issue, so if it rears its ugly head, feel free to reach out again.

Thank you so much for taking time to share that information. Sounds like it will work, I will try it out tomorrow. I had tried deleting the parts that I had carved off the same unlocked image that I carved with and it wasn’t working out, it would always want to delete the whole image. Thanks again.
It can all be done as one project. Select each object and switch to the CUT tab. You can use the slider or enter the cut depth value here.
While you can do it on a single project, it is super-easy to create an extra workpiece for the manipulation of pieces and parts which adds a little bit of protection for someone just starting out against messing up their work.
The current issue that having pocket cuts and outline cuts on the same workpiece is that if you are using two-stage carving, Easel will currently always use the Detail bit for the outline cuts. This may or may not be a problem depending on what a user is doing, but I find that it is beneficial to simply separate them unless I am using one single bit (which…is mostly never the case…).
