I just set the depth of carve to within a fraction of a millimeter, usually half, of the full depth of the work piece, and I get just a thin bit of wood still holding the pieces together.

Why not use tabs and have less to clean up?
What do you mean less cleanup? I have to cut tabs, then sand them down, CAREFULLY. With this onion skin as NeilFerreri called it, I just need a couple passes of the sandpaper and its gone. Way easier.
