Hello everyone. I am in the middle of the plans for upgrading my X-Carve with the screw drive, z-axis slider, and motors. I have the been trying to figure out which of the motors to buy, Nema 23 CNC Stepper Motor 1.9Nm (269oz.in) or Nema 23 57mm Stepper Motor 3Nm (425oz.in) would be best.

425oz.
Specifications:

Manufacturer Part Number: 23HS45-4204S
Step Angle: 1.8°
Holding Torque: 3.0Nm(425oz.in)
Rated Current/phase: 4.2A
Phase Resistance: 0.9ohms
Recommended Voltage: 24-48V
Inductance: 3.8mH±20%(1KHz)
Weight: 1.8kg
Lead Length: 30cm

269oz.
Specifications:

Manufacturer Part Number: 23HS30-2804S
Step Angle: 1.8°
Step Accuracy: 5%
Holding Torque: 1.9Nm(269oz.in)
Rated Current/phase: 2.8A
Phase Resistance: 1.13ohms
Voltage: 3.2V
Inductance: 5.4mH±20%(1KHz)
Weight: 1.1kg
Lead length: 30cm

Would the 425oz. work with the X-controller?

I carve mostly wood, the hardest being Osage, but also want to so some light metal work as well. I have the 1000x1000 orginal model and the upgraded x-axis makerslide.

Any help would be appreciated.

The x-controller is rated to provide up to 4 amps per stepper motor; it won’t be able to fully power the 425oz steppers.

Pulled from the FAQ section of the [X-controller product page](https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-controller-kit):

> **What stepper motors can be used?**
> The X-Controller can supply up to 4 amps per motor. You can safely use all of that power without over heating. Like a gShield, you can run bigger motors, but the current is still limited to the max of 4 amps. We recommend using Nema 17 or 23 motors.

425 oz-in is overkill for an Xcarve in my opinion.

I recommend these:

> **[NEMA23 270oz/in 2.8A 1/4″ Dual Shaft Stepper Motor (KL23H276-28-4B) |](https://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/nema-23/nema-23-quarter-inch-dual-shaft-with-flat/)**
>
> High-Torque Stepper Motor, Stepper Motor, Driver, Stepper Motor kit, DC Servo Motor, DC Servo Motor kit, Stepper Motor Power Supply, CNC Router, Spindle, and other Components.

Lower inductance plays nicer with the 24V than the higher inductance of the 269 oz-in you linked.

Just note that for a Z slider, the wires need a little extension. I spliced excess from one of the other ones in and don’t have any issues.

Thanks. I overlooked the difference in the amps. Guess I just saw the 4 and moved on.

I’ll take a look at them. Thanks.
