Which version of GRBL did you go with?
Dont recall where it show in UGS but it will display in Easel Machine Inspector.

Maybe the first boot was wrong.
2017 seems like 10 years ago…that’s the same version I run on my machines.

This sounds like a classic homing issue where the machine is just hitting the limit switch and not disengaging.
A couple of quick things to check, since it’s an Alarm 8 (Hard Limit) during homing-
- Check the $22 setting- Make sure Homing is actually enabled. It should be $22=1.
- Check the limit switch state- In your console, type ? and look at the status report. The Pn: part (for Probes/Pins) should NOT show X, Y, or Z when the machine is away from the switches. If it does show a pin name, you have a switch wired backwards (needs to be Normally Open, or NO) or a wiring issue causing a constant signal.
If the switches are triggering, but not backing off, it’s almost always that initial wiring check.
